Facts about Drowsy Driving

AAA and NHTSA estimates 328,000 crashes, 109,000 injuries, 6,400 deaths, and $109 billion in monetary losses are the direct result of drowsy driving each year.

The National Sleep Foundation found that:

  • 60% of adult drivers (168 million people) admit to driving drowsy in the past year
  • 37% (103 million people) have actually fallen asleep at the wheel
  • 13% say they have done so at least once a month

Greater than 50% of drowsy driving crashes involve drivers under the age of 25
Lack of sleep mimics alcohol intoxication:

  • 18 hours without sleep equals BAC of 0.05%
  • 21 hours without sleep equals BAC of 0.08% (legal limit in every state)
  • 24 hours without sleep equals BAC of 0.10%

Effects of sleepiness:

  • Slower reaction time
  • Impaired judgment and vision
  • Decline in attention to important signs, road
changes and the actions of other vehicles
  • Decreased alertness
  • Problems with short-term memory
  • Increased moodiness and aggressive behavior
